5 questions à....
Cayla Kluver
(auteure de Alera)
Bonjour Cayla ! Et merci d'avoir accepté de participer à cette nouvelle rubrique !
1ère question : Vous avez commencé à écrire très jeune. Est-ce parce que vous baigniez dans un univers littéraire ? Grâce à vos parents, amis, etc ?
5 questions to....
Cayla Kluver
(author of the Legacy trilogy)
Hello Cayla and thanks a millions for agreeing to be the first guest of this meme !
1st question: You’ve started writing really young. Was it because you were immersed into a literary universe since you were a little girl thanks to your parents or friends? Or were there any other reasons?
I was definitely immersed in books as a little girl. I had a lot of my books memorized when I was young so my mom isn’t sure when I actually learned to read. I used to hold the book version of Disney’s Sleeping Beauty upside down and recite it. I love telling stories and creating worlds into which people can disappear. But for me, writing has always been a sort of sanctuary. It’s something that’s completely mine, a playground of creativity. For whatever reason, my mind craves that. I’m a bit solitary and introverted. I’ve been writing forever – being published this soon was really unexpected and fortunate.
2nd question: Alera is a proud, independent, intelligent 17 year-old-girl. Did you use your own experience or life to create her character or did she just pop out of your head?
In my first draft of Legacy, Alera was stiff, moralistic, and too overtly opinionated – a bit like me when I started the draft! The process of writing the book helped me grow up, so by the time I was rewriting, I was able to tone Alera down to make her more relatable, instead of just a channel through which I could vent my teenage thoughts and frustrations. I’m so happy you’re able to describe her as “proud, independent, and intelligent” – I feel really good that she was able to take on a personality of her own. Hopefully that means I’ve become a more mature person too!
3rd question: Where did you get the idea of writing Legacy?
The character of Narian, along with his entire back-story, just popped into my head one day. Two years later I wanted to try to write something longer than eleven pages (which was the longest story I’d managed up to that point), and I knew that in order to persevere through an entire novel, I needed a concept I was really passionate about. Since Narian had been with me for so long, I decided he was a good place to start. From there, I created the other characters and the setting, all to tell his story.
Thanks a million Cayla for being such a great guest ! I wish you all the best for your next writings and hope to read you really soon !
